The Turtle, Chapter 3

What do you guys think the Turtle that Joad catches represents ?

  1. When the turtle was first introduced, I thought it might represent mankind's struggles to survive, but now that it's been caught I'm not so sure. Maybe it's more along the lines of the will to survive, and Joad catching it shows that he's determined to carry on?

  2. Well it could symbolize the struggle with man cs. Man with one constantly having the upper hand.

  3. Those answers make sense, I kind of thought that the turtle could represent the Joads and their struggles.

  4. i actually tought that the turtle represented Tom Joad and how he is struggling through life but one way or another he manages to go through the difficult challenge he was put through. im guessing that means that Tom Joad, as well as the turtle, will survive through the difficult situations he was put through. :)

  5. at first I thought the turtle represented Tom also, but as i read on through the book I begin to think that the turtle represented the Joad family and their will to survive. The two are symbolic bescause despite Tom's constant efforts to keep the turtle it continued to try to escape. Similarly despite the constant struggles the Joad family runs into, they contine to try to escape into a stable and fitting environment for their family.

  6. Taking I just start with the book, I do agree with Ana's first point with the turtle representing humanity's struggle. Maybe more specifically those struggling against the Dust Bowl given the scene where the turtle encountered two different drivers. The first one being an average woman and going out of her way to avoid hitting the turtle, and the second second driver being someone who purposely aims to run over it. The woman could be your average person living up their sense of morality. Assuming the driver is a worker considering their light truck, it could be a representation of how cold-blooded a worker could be even when you are seen struggling. I'll see if my opinion changes as I read on.

  8. I know I'm showing up late to the show but I agree with you guys. I think that the turtle represents those dealing with the dust bowl who have to make their slow journey to California possible. Also in this chapter I remember reading about the two different drivers: the one that avoided the turtle, and the one that tried running over the turtle. In my opinion I believe that the female driver who avoided the turtle represents those who try and help the families of the dust bowl and the male driver who was aggressive represents those who didn't care about them and wanted them out of their way.
