The Hines

In chapter 16 we find out that the Hines are the grandparents of Christmas. We also found out what happened to Christmas as a baby and why he was in the orphanage in the first place. Long story short, Christmas mother (Milly) died while giving birth and soon after Mr. Hines left for some time. When he came back it was only for a moment, then he left again only he took the baby with him this time. Mrs. Hines didn't hear from him for a long time, so she just waited for him in hopes that he'd come back, and he did, but Christmas was gone. He told Mrs. Hines that they were moving and that was the last time she saw Christmas, until now. Now that they have seen him after all those years, Mr. Hines wants him dead and Mrs. Hines wants to see to him. What are your thoughts on the Hines?

  1. It a pretty interesting relation ship, Mrs. Hines wants to see her grandchild while Mr. Hines wants him dead; that is a huge split in their thought of Christmas.

  2. Mr. Hines is a prototypical man of this time, while Mrs. Hines have very liberal set of morals for the time. They strongly conflict, and will cause conflict later on if Mr Hines becomes aware again. Mr. Hines' reputation is on the line if Christmas remians alive, so it is understandable that he wants Christmas dead. For if the truth got out, Mr. Hines life would be over, and his reputation destroyed.

    1. I agree, Mr.Hines reputation would be on the line if people found out who Christmas was to him.

  3. I think Mr. Hines knew that the conflict of Christmas being both black and white would cause all the wrong types of trouble. He tried giving him a life by taking him to that orphanage, yet once he heard about this whole murder situations he knew what he had done was a mistake. That's why he had tried and is continuing to try to kill Christmas. However with Mrs. Hines she's does have a sense of morality and just wants to see her grandson only once. I don't think she cares what happens to him unless he dies but she just would like to see him once.

  4. Obviously, the Hines have hidden intentions that greatly and ultimately differ from another.

  6. I think Mr. Hines was just a product of growing up in the south. His hate went so far as to take his daughter's child and leave him at the orphanage, knowing that Christmas was the last connection he would have with Milly.
