We also learn Through the Trucker's questioning that Tom's dad is named Tom Joad. The trucker feels that Tom is taciturn. " He stopped, feeling lonely after a long speech.... His secret eyes turned on his passenger.... Joad remained silent.... nervously the driver tried to force him into participation." (Steinbeck, 1939, p.10). This quote shows that the tom is a quiet individual. Through this quote, it is acquired that the Trucker gets very lonely on the Job. As their ride continues, we learn that Tom also drinks and smokes. The Trucker's interminable questioning brings out Tom's dark side, showing that Tom does not like being pestered. By the end of the Chapter, the, Tom reveals to the trucker that he has been in a State Penitentiary for the past four years for committing murder. This revelations shows how forthright Tom is.

I definitely agree Goodness. Tom is an isolated individual with quick temper. There's really no more to add, you have covered the basic characteristics of Tom.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with you Reyna, Tom is a very lonely man. I also feel he is this way because he has been in jail so long.

ReplyDeleteThis is a really good analysis! Great job! I agree with you. Tom is really open too when it comes to being with the truck driver. Although he seemed pretty irritated by how many questions the driver was asking him. lol
ReplyDeleteI agree Tonda, Tom does seem irritated by the Truck drivers questions.
DeleteGoodness, this was a very thoughtful analysis of Tom's character; however, I also thought Tom was very clever. When he asks the trucker to give him a ride, he chooses his words carefully, leaving the trucker no choice but to let him on. "The driver...considered the parts of this answer....He knew he was being trapped, but he couldn't see any way out. And he wanted to be a good guy," (Steinbeck, 1939, p. 6). This quote shows that the driver was being manipulated by Tom's words; it shows how Tom was using the man's morality against him. The man says he wanted to be a "good guy," but if he didn't do this, he wouldn't be a "good guy." This doesn't only show that Tom was smart, but also manipulative. So we can infer that maybe he didn't really care for other's feelings, he only cared for his own personal benefit, which I think is a big part of his Character.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Pablo that Tom is very clever. I do feel that Tom acted harsh towards the trucker, but he had just been released from jail. Tom should have been more appreciative of the ride, but the trucker did ask him numerous questions. Tom does have a dark side, that I feel comes out when he is irritated. I believe that Tom does care about others, especially his family.
DeleteI felt as if Tom was very disrespectful towards the Truck driver even though the Truck driver disobeyed his rule. He is, for sure, an easily irruteated person. Overall, I agree with your analysis on Tom Ms.Ross :)
ReplyDeleteI thought Ms.Ross posted this :S So sorry Goodness :(
DeleteIt's alright Josh. I felt Tom was rude to the Truck driver as well.
