Laura has a great love for her glass collection and takes on the painstaking task of cleaning and protecting it. The glass itself is very fragile, which is why it demands so much attention. Like the glass, Laura is very fragile. She needs constant attention, not merely for her handicap, but for her low self-esteem. In the scene where Tom and Amanda fight and the glass breaks may be an ominous foreshadow of Laura's troubling future. It can be predicted that their constant bickering will leave her vulnerable to some other dire situation... or even victim to her own insecurities.
I also agree with Jessica. The glass menagerie is symbolic to Laura because she is fragile and is cared for by her mother, sometimes a little too much, which I believe cripples her even more mentally.
I agree as well. During the scene where Laura and Jim are having a conversation, Jim notices Laura's low self-esteem. Just as glass is transparent, this to me seemed as if Laura was transparent enough to where people get to analyze her quick.
They are just plane glass until the light shines threw them and rainbows appear. I thought that Jim symbolized the "light" that made Laura's colors finally shine through her planeness.
I agree with everyone so far that the glass menagerie symbolizes Laura but I also believe it symbolizes her family's dynamic in that whenever anything is broken Amanda feels the need to fix it. For example when the gentleman caller comes, Amanda believes the house is in dissaray and refurnishes everything.
i think the glass menagerie is symbolic of Laura as she is fragile and the unicorn in particular is her as it is unique from the horses and Laura herself is unique.

ReplyDeleteI would agree. We also see however, how quickly glass can change and the unicorn turning into a horse reflects Laura's character.

I like this connection. I agree that Jim is the light that allows Laura to shine.
DeleteI agree that the glass menagerie symbolizes Laura, because it is evident that Laura is fragile and so is glass so you have to take great care of it.
