Metaphoric Turtle-- Chapter 3

Are the barley oats it holds symbolic for something?

  1. That's not what I really got out of it.. I suppose they could be, like he's taking a piece of his "home" wherever he goes. But I didn't really think anything of it other than they were probably annoying to the turtle. I Thought the symbolism with the turtle was that no matter the struggle you don't give up, but persevere, and get to where you're going.

  2. I agree with Chloe; if anything the oats could symbolize a sense of "home" or something to remind the turtle of the past, but I doubt it had a strong sense of symbolism or meaning. If they were purposely meant to symbolize something, I think Steinback would have focused more on them. From my point of view, I saw the path of the turtle most symbolic. I think it was meant to show that the Sedan driver didn't purposely hit the turtle, but the truck driver did. This was important because the truck driver symbolized large companies/corporations/businesses, and the turtle was sent flying to a Southwest direction, which is also the direction in which California is.

  3. I agree with both Chloe and Julia. It focused more on where the turtle was heading. The little fella was working hard, conquering obstacles and then WHAM, and selfish imbecile destroys the turtles progress. I feel the oats are the least important part.
