Chapter 19
In this chapter Steinbeck has portrayed capitalism through the eyes of third person omniscient. Capitalism has been portrayed through the land-owning banks as being "monsters" by the deviations the bank has caused to land-owning families. Derogatory terms used by Steinveck throughly the novel are "Okies" which mean Sons of Bitches and "Big Cat" which are machines used by the banks in order to evict farmers from their land. Also, a revolutionary revolt as of the novel was the Great Depression of 1931 which hit America and caused many revolts towards banks. Do you believe in the "American Way".

I don't think Steinbeck is criticizing capitalism but how people are taking advantage of Capitalism. Furthermore, the American way, is the freedom to choose, and the freedom to try. The great depression was caused by unpreparedness and mishandling of money by the bank. Although, to the people who were left with nothing, it was easy to blame the system. It was easy for them to force something else to take the blame for their failures. What makes capitalism so efective and preferred, is the chance to try.
ReplyDeleteAny kind of "ism" has its flaws. No system could work out perfectly for everyone, including the poor. I agree with Chris. Maybe the migrant families are just looking for someone to blame, and that is Capitalism in their eyes. Ali, to answer you question at the end of the post. I do believe in the American way because although it is very difficult to succeed the American Dream, it is not impossible.
