Chapter 6
The Joad family is willing to move to California, but aren't not happy with losing their land causing a much more bitter temptation towards a new life in the west(California). Since many families are moving to California there will conflicts such as: overpopulation, high competition(business wise), and lower wages which were seen during the 1st Industrial Revolution. Tom faces the irony that many other families are moving west and are having the same temptations and goals in California as of Tom and the Joads. Will the Joads make it in the West or will they face the same problems all other families will face socially and economically?

Perhaps in order to "make it" in California the Joads will have to face the same social and economical problems as the other families also vying for a new life, as a means to an end. Only after experiencing and overcoming those issues will the Joads be able to establish a new life in California; however, failure to overcome those issues can result in a slow spiral to a life of scavenging for surviavl, similar to Muley's, for the Joads.

DeleteThoughout their journey the Joads do face overpopulation such as the make shiftcamp they stay in. Also the deal with a lot of problems with other people such as the cops that reffer to them as Okies which is an insult, but even in difficult time family some how find ways to go on.
ReplyDeleteI personally think they are going to face some of economical problems to make it to California. They had also started a new life, like he said that the turtle are always trying to get there in his chapter. But I also feel that they are going to go throughout some obstacle throughout the way.
ReplyDeleteHaving the advnatge of being much further in the book now, I am able to look back and recognize how closely this book, and this chapter, relates to modern day immigration. The issues are almost similar, and the country's reaction to the great push west in the 30's, as well as, today's immigration are indistinguishable in its bitter response.
ReplyDeleteThis post reminded me of what happened a few years ago, around 2011. The economy came plummeting down and everyone around me was moving to California in order to find work and a better life for there families, including mine. Chapter 6 reminded me of just that. The more people that are moving to CA, the less jobs and the lower wages.
