Light In August: Ch.4

In chapter 4 a lot has happened and all of it is being explained by Byron to Reverend Hightower. We find out that Ms. Burden was murdered; Brown and Christmas are the suspects. Both of them were no where to be found, until Brown heard about the reward money of a thousand dollars, then Brown goes into town and pins the whole thing on Christmas. When he was explaining what had happened he kept getting stuck when the sheriff asked him questions, he was very fidgety most of the time, and he wasn't certain of his answers. To me all of those are signs of lying and on page 42 Byron states that “And even a liar can be scared into telling the truth.” Having the feeling that Byron is a liar, how is Lena going to react to hearing about her future husband being a potential murderer? What do you think she is going to do?

  1. I think the community and Byron will try to not have Lena find out that the father of her baby, Brown, is a potential murderer because of her pregnant state. She might faint and cause the baby harm. If I was Lena, there are a myriad number of feelings that I would feel. How can the father of my baby possibly be a murderer? I can't even imagine what Lena is going to think.

    1. Yeah, I agree. They will try their hardest to keep it from Lena for her and the baby's sake, but sooner or later she will find out.

  2. I believe Lena will eventually start to realize what's happening to her and who to believe.

  3. Byron will probably try to keep it from her, but I think Lena will eventually realize what's happening, she seems to catch on to things quick.

  4. I agree with Karen, I think Byron and the community will try to withhold the truth as long as they can in order to keep Lena unstressed and the baby safe.
