After reading more chapters in The Scarlet Letter, we have seen a little bit more of Dimmesdale, and so what are your thoughts on Dimmesdale's character? Do you think he must stay a heroic figure for the people in the town? Or do you think he is selfish?
I think he is a coward. I also think he is selfish and immature in that he will not accept the consequences of his actions. And I do not think he would be a heroic figure to the people if they knew of his actions.
ReplyDeletePersonally i want Dimmesdale to be a heroic figure, but i know he is cowardly because he worries too much about what others think about him.
ReplyDeleteI would disagree with him being selfish. Dimmesdale, I believe, is protecting his congregation from the the truth. If he comes out and reveals the truth, what might happen to the church? Hes protecting their faith even if it means living a lie and even if it destroys him inside.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the idea that Dimmesdale is a coward and isn't take responsibility but I also agree with Janeth that he is trying to protect their faith or preventing the congregation from dividing or it would even cause certain people from going down spiritually. I know this from experience since a similar situation occurred at my old church and well it was harsh to find out what happened. I don't view Dimmesdale as a heroic figure and instead of being a hero within his congregation he should be a hero for Hester and Pearl now that they are part of him even though he doesn't accept it until he realizes how important they are to him.
