Vengeance

When we are introduced to Hester's husband, we there  begin to realize his motives regarding what Hester did while he was talking to the townsman  In the chapter "The Interview" we now know that he is looking for revenge. Not with Hester but with her unknown lover. So the question becomes what will happen if he does find the classified lover?

  1. Hmm... interesting inquiry Jorge. I think that if he were to find out who the unknown lover is, which I think is doubtful because Hesther seems pretty adamant on keeping her lips sealed, then I think we could expect to see some man vs. man violence.

  2. He did say that if one possessed the qualities to effectively investigate the matter then it wouldn't matter whether anyone said anything about it. I think he will find out regardless.

  3. I also believe that Chillingworth will eventually find out who the lover is. Though, while I was reading chapters 8 and 9, I began to make an inference of who the father of Pearl is and noticed how Chillingworth becomes a dynamic character. “At first, his expression had been calm, meditative, scholar-like. Now, there was something ugly and evil in his face, which they had not previously noticed... “(pg. 105) Even though, Chillingworth changes in a way that he seems evil; I don't expect him to use violence against the lover. He might use some psychological or medical way to take vengeance since he’s an intellectual and a physician.

    1. Dayanna, great use of textual evidence! He really is a dynamic character. I wonder if any other character in the story could be labeled as such?

  4. Although Dayanna brings out a good point that Chillingworth may very well use his knowledge of medicine to satisfy his vengeance, I agree with Sierra that there will definitely be "man v.s. man violence". On page 107 it describes his growing obsession.

"He had began an investigation, as he imagined, with the severe and equal integrity of a judge... But as he proceeded, a terrible fascination, a kind of fierce, thought still calm, necessity seized the old man within it's gripe, and never set him free again, until he had done all it's bidding."

We have already seen that Chillingworth is starting to become more and more aggressive towards Dimmesdale in his rash attempts to try to get him to confess his sins. I think it is only logical to conclude that with time, that tensions will rise even higher and Chillingworth will resort to violence to get the answers the desperately craves.

  5. I agree that Roger Chillingworth is a dynamic character, and i believe as time progresses on Chillingworth will lose patience and turn into a antagonist, and will cause a man vs. man conflict with Hester's secret lover.
