Emerson

As searching more about the transcendentalist movement I found this quote from Emerson that made me wonder how amazing it would be if we actually united and worked to make a change in society letting those around us see that good still exists. "We will walk on our own feet; we will work with our own hands; we will speak our own minds...A nation of men will for the first time exist, because each believes himself inspired by the Divine Soul which also inspires all men." (Emerson) Any thoughts on this?

  1. I personally think having a communion like this as a nation is impossible. I know he didn't mean it in a literal sense. I believe only certain individuals are able to become themselves. There's so much that society controls about the individual it's crazy to even think about it. I am who I am because I saw it somewhere else. This type of thought has to begin in a very open minded individual or at a very early age. We can live off of our own inspiration, but it's more common to live off of someone's inspiration rather than our own. I'm not saying there's no potential, I just don't have the belief in humanity I'd like to have.

  2. That quote by Emerson reminded me of the comment that Mrs. Ross made today about the John Lennon song, Imagine, "A brotherhood of man, all the people sharing all the world." I think those lyrics capture the essence of transcendentalism. The concept of mankind uniting under one religion, or a "Divine Soul" is definitely appealing but I agree with Janeth that it is imposible.
