In the Crucible do you guys see Danforth as a puppet of politics? I personally see him as a politican today mostly agreeing with what will benefit him.
I wouldnt say that he was necessarily a puppet of politics I saw him as a just man who was simple naive and ignorant to the real problems of Salem. He in all respects was simply just trying to do the right thing, he tried to rid the world of evil and tried to uphold the virtues of his religion which was why he was chosen as the judge of the witchtrials.
Danforth being so sure that no one can lie in the court failed to see that the accusations being made can be a lie. clear evidence was not used which made it easy for Abigail to manipulate him. In this way i do see him being a puppet but i wouldnt compare him to a politician today
I think he acted on everyone's behalf as well as his own. In a way he was trying to please everyone. He acted on Procter's behalf by giving him a second chance, and on Abigail's behalf by arresting Proctor. He acted on Elizabeth's behalf by having her try to convince Proctor to confess. He was trying to do the right thing but he was ignorant in the ways to do so. He was kind of a puppet because in the end he got played and did what Abigail wanted him to. Though i wouldn't compare him to a politician in today's society

ReplyDeleteI agree with Brian that Danforth didn't necessarily act out of selfishness but because he was ignorant.
ReplyDeleteI agree as well. Danforth was just acting according to his role which was to judge. I would say the same as Sierra and Brian that he was ignorant.
