The Scarlet Letter and the Crucible

There were many similarities between The Scarlet Letter and The Crucible but one that I realized was how both Hester and Elizabeth both protected the love of their lives. Hester never revealed who was Pearl's father and Elizabeth lied to the court about what occurred between Proctor and Abigail.  I'm not positive if this was a good connection but do you guys have any other thoughts on why they both did these acts?

  1. I believe they lied because they were in love. I think that if the men were in their positions they would have done the same thing to preserve the one they cherish. Love changes people so that they have an ultimate reason to live.

  2. I think that's a really good connection. The other similarity I saw between the two stories was the theme of vengeance. Abigail's motive to ruin Elizabeth is similar to Chillingworth's motive to ruin Dimmesdale.

    1. That is true. I never thought of this either.

  3. I agree, this is good connection . Hester and Elizabeth lied to protect who they love. No matter what the circumstances, they did it for a reason and that is because love has changed them to be true even if it meant lying. As bethany said "to preserve the one they cherish."

  4. Also we could see the power of love. This sounds like a weak statement but this is how I view the situation.

  5. Also, another connection could be made by the society in both stories because in The Scarlet Letter their society is ranked ultimately by the traditional Puritan religion and as seen in The Crucible, society is ranked by social hierarchy yet in both societies, they are consumed by their environments.

  6. You have me thinking that next time I assign both readings I should have the students write a comparison/contrast essay!
