Biblical References?

There were several biblical references evident in The Grapes of Wrath, many of which I was not fully aware of while I was reading it. After our class discussion I kept an eye open for them; did you find any possible references in The Crucible?

  1. I thought of the death of jesuschrist when proctor died innocently. The fact that innocence was no longer of importance got me thinking along those lines.

  2. I agree with Janeth, Jesus Christ died to be the propitiation for our sins and Proctor died to save the names of the people who died before him. I can see that connection.

  3. Hmm I can see that connection as well...

I don't think this is really a reference, but I couldn't help but notice that the Crucible takes place in a town named "Salem" which reminded me of the story of city named Jerusalem. Basically the people of Jerusalem where told to flee and if they didn't they would be destroyed. At the end of the Crucible, Abigail and her friends fled the town and were able to escape any possible punishment that could be brought upon them while the rest of the townspeople were left to suffer. I know that the play is based off historical events, but I found it ironic.

  4. Your observation is very interesting, Jessica. You were on point with bringing up the biblical references. Also consider the title of the play.
