At the end of Chapter 16, I started to wonder how Joe's life would've been different if he would have lived with the Hines'. Would his experiences have been more drastic, less drastic, or equally drastic? I see that Mr.Hines is a violent, religious mam in a similar way that Mr.McEachern was. I'm just curious to know your opinions on how Joe's life would've been different if he would have stayed in the Hines household as opposed to living in the McEachern household.
I personally think Joe's life would have been worse if he were raised by Mr. Hines. In chapter 16, Faulkner mentioned how Mr. Hines hit his pregnant daughter with his gun. If he was capable of attacking his own daughter, what makes you think he's not afraid of hurting a child.
ReplyDeletei agree how Joes life could have been much worse if he had lived with the Hines. However both the Hines and the McEacherns are strict so there is a possibility his life could have been the same.
DeleteI agree because mr Hines seems to be more violent the mceachern and I don't believe that mr Hines would've even give joe a chance and joe would've turned out even worse
DeleteI believe it could have been worse or about the same. However Mr. Hines did leave Ms. Hines alone with Christmas for a short amount of time. If things would have stayed like that his life would have been fine.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Guadalupe, that it would be the same or worst. I do not think much would have change. I see that the Hines' and the McEachern family the same. Both the men in the family are aggressive and both the women keep to them selves and quiet. So i do not think his life would have changed much
ReplyDeleteI think if he stayed in the Hines household his life would be nearly the same since like you said there were many similarities between McEachern and Hines.
ReplyDeleteI think the conditions would be similar if not worse than the McEcahern household. Like you said, Mr. Hines is a violent and religious man just like Mr. McEachern. Also, Mrs. Hines would most likely not protect Christmas just like Mrs. McEachern because of the time period they were living in. Last, Mr.Hines would have most likely taken his anger of his daughter being pregnant out on him. I doubt he would be treated better.
ReplyDeleteI agree I think nothing would really change if he would have been raised by Mr.Hines because he would have treated Christmas harsh just like Mr.McEachern did.
DeleteIt's sad how either way he still would have been abused. There was no way of preventing it.
DeletePerhaps it could have bern worse however one does not really know, what if that what us in his position with different parents , however perhaps he wouldnt be as confused as he is now in fining himself
ReplyDeleteMaybe he'd be more confused in finding himself because he'd have an influence (mr.Hines) speaking racial slurs to him
DeleteIf Christmas lived with mr.hines then joe might of been the same. Mr.hines was still a women beater and a very religious. There is no difference form joes step father. Mrs.hines would be just like joes foster mother, but joe would of found out about his parents.
ReplyDeleteI think that Christams situation would remain the same since both men have that very aggresive demenior. What really struck me was how Mr. Hines wanted for the police to kill Christmas right then in there when he was being arrested insead of taking him to Jeferson. Maybe this action, could make Mr. Hines be a worse option for Christmas.
ReplyDeleteI think that regardless of who Christmas was left with, he was going to have a "bad ending". He was never truly cared for by either Mr. Hines or Mr. McEachern. I think that Mr. Hines would have been a lot more aggressive and hard on Christmas. I think that Christmas would have had worse treatment in the Hines' household because Hines was never sympathetic towards Christmas. He felt it was his mission to punish him, whereas McEachern disciplined him for what he thought was wrong or sacrilegious.
ReplyDeleteI agree with everyone. I think that Christmas life would have been much worse if he had been raised by the Hines.
ReplyDeleteI agree that maybe his life might of been much worse. If McEachern, knowing Christmas wasn't his son, would still beat him why wouldn't his parents. Either way at the end Christmas' life would still have a bad ending. I feel like regardless of what life he had he would have the same final outcome.
ReplyDeleteI suspect that this was a deliberate choice by Faulkner to illustrate a point; that if Christmas hadn't been an "orphan," his life could well have been worse. Maybe he would have come out of it with healthier ideas about sex or women, but I doubt they could be much better. I think Faulkner chose to illustrate this in order to highlight the hopelessness of the situation; of Christmas' life. It begs the question: what is a person to do? It comes up over and over in the novel; characters are driven more by their place in society than by themselves- they are locked onto the rails of society. Hines is only somewhat distinguishable from McEachern (either the men or their wives); Lucas Burch was only ever going to flee and Bunch was only ever going to chase him just as Lena was only ever going to follow Lucas. I think Faulkner wrote this novel to challenge the idea (that many in our class have brought up) that a person can just "choose," to break a cycle. Faulkner built in cycles to illustrate the hugeness of the walls of the circle which we (Like Christmas) run along.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the majority of you guys that say he would have been worse off. First of all, like Amanda Munoz pointed out, Hines could have taken his anger out on Christmas about his daughters pregnancy and maybe even other things that happened through out their lives. Hines character is not a very pleasant one and, like Mceachern, would have mistreated him bad. Mcheachern never tried to kill Christmas like Hines did so that kind of hints off his life being worse with Hines.
