The Lingering Past

"Though during the last seven days he has had no paved street, yet he has travelled further than in all the thirty years before. And yet he is still inside the circle. ‘And yet I have been further in these seven days than in all the thirty years"
These roads that Christmas is traveling on seems to be endless and continues to keep going anyways. While on the run, the day's become endless as well. The further he keeps running, the more the past lingers onto him. Although, during this experience, he is reborn and is no longer haunted by his identity of a biracial man. I feel that his epiphany saved him from having a troubling future. I can finally start to see a brighter future for Christmas.

  1. I see where you are coming from; however, him finally being relaxed being alone I believe isn't a good thing. Doesn't that mean that he will never accept himself in a society ?

    1. Maybe it'll help him accept himself and whenever he is around people he will feel more comfortable. I think he has a chance if changing.

    2. Everyone has a chance to change, but they have to want to.

    3. I agree with Lupe, i don't thin it's a good thing for Christmas to be alone. I think it could hurt him more then help him.

    4. I can see where you both are coming from. But being alone might give him time to think and see what he wants in his life; if he wants to change or not.

    5. I like the topic of whether or not Christmas being alone is good or bad, I think it is very important for Christmas to accept who he is, and i don't think its a choice it is just a matter of opportunity. However changing for society, and bending to their rules is a choice.

  2. I also believe Christmas will change his life around for good. He has lived a terrible life and now that he is alone it has helped him view everything differently.

    1. I agree with you. He will be able to see what has been happening and what he wants, and be able to change

  3. I don't think that Christmas will change his life around. That is because he still has not learned to let go of his past. In order for him to grow as a person he needs to at least attempt to overcome his past

    1. I agree with Francisco, in order for him to grow as person & learn to accept himself he first needs to learn how not to let his painful past continue to become a burden to himself.

    2. I totally agree. I don't see Christmas coming to terms with his past any time soon. Some people just don't have the capacity to let go and forgive. They hold in this hatred which causes them to rebel. That seems to be the case with Christmas.

    3. I disagree because people don't like change. So Christmas will cling on the item that comforts him, violence. Even if he is given true love, he might not know what to do and spiral back to his original self.

  4. Can you elaborate more on "he was reborn"? I don't think he has come to terms with who he is, or what he's done. He hasn't really let go of the past. He doesn't accept himself, perhaps he has understood his situation but he hasn't fully accepted it. He doesn't seem at peace with himself. I don't think his future will be very mirthful and I doubt that he will stay out of trouble. The society he lives in condemns him for his actions and that certainly does not help.

    1. I completely agree with you julia Christmas still has a long way to go he still does not accept his past and he lets it haunt him and ruin every relationship he has had.

  5. Yea, I think that Joe will have a rough time coming into terms of himself. Because of his troubling childhood, his past has shaped him to be an outsider and a cruel man. In order for him to be grow, he has to accept his past and himself.

  7. Can you go more into depth about the "epiphany" that Joe has encountered?

  8. By reborn what is it exactly that your trying to point out? I do see how he has changed.

  9. I think that Christmas is slowly going to evolve and not pay much attention to what others have to say about him.

  10. I think that he will slowly let go of his past and change who he really wants to be.

  11. First off, he was caught so that 'endless' road did end for him. Additional, I don't think it's the fact that his lingering past that makes him feel the way he does, it's that he doesn't accept himself therefore, making himself isolated from what he thinks society is.

  12. I don't think that he has come to the point in which he has the ability to accept his past and himself for who he is. He may never come to terms with who he is unless society is willing to accept him first.

  13. I do see a bright future for Christmas however, I see him struggling to for runaway instead of owning up for his mistakes.

  14. i saw a negative future for Christmas due to the fact that he was running! He might have relief for a few moments but at the end of the day he will have to confront all that he was running from! Life will run faster than him and catch up to him and haunt him all his life if he keeps running.
