Do you guys think dimsdale should be punished or out-casted as Hester was in the beginning chapters? Also do you guys think that gender might have influenced why people were harsher towardsHester?
I think Dimmesdale should receive equal punishment as Hester but not necessarily in the same form. He was just as guilty as she was and needs to take responsibility for his actions no matter what the consequences might be. As for the second part of your question we have nothing to compare it to so I am unable to answer it.
I believe that Dimmesdale should be punished harsher than Hester, because he preaches and teaches holiness and pureness to the people so he knows that he shouldn't sin but he did it anyways. To the second part of the question i don't believe gender has to do with anything when it comes to judging their character, but to the people gender does matter.
I would agree that the position in the social order has everything to do with what punishment each should receive. It would be fair to adjust a similar punishment for both, but I don't think thats going to be the case since the gallows have been mentioned.
Well as everyone agrees I agree as well that he should receive his punishment similar to Hesters. Though, in a way I think he is already being punished. I would say he is internally lifeless and each day hes tormented by having to keep his sin as a secret while showing another character within society. I don't believe gender has a lot to do with it. A person who sins, being female or male, will be punished based on their sin not because of their gender or I might be wrong.
