Rose of Sharon and Connie (don't read if you're not this far)
I kind of had a feeling Connie would leave Rose of Sharon, did anyone else? She was so hyped on him getting a job and maintaining her and the child “We got to have a house 'fore the babg comes. We ain’t gonna have this baby in no tent.” She was demanding for too much with all her pretty dream talk about him studying up on radios and moving off together. A guy could only take so much before his demanding and soon to be high maintenance wife drives him crazy and feels like he needs to get out. He's still very immature and a coward for leaving but at times like this I don't think he was really ready to chew what he bit off.

Don't forget that Connie was engaging in "dream talk" as well, along with Al. It seems to be a common trait in the Joad family. It could be that he was fantasizing about what could be to distract himself from what really was, but eventually he couldn't keep up the illusion and had to flee.
ReplyDeleteI agree, he wasnt ready for all the commitment of being a father and Rose was being quite demanding when they didn't have much. I think in some aspects she pushed him to go with all the things she wanted, especially at the young age that they're at, with hormones being as high as they can get. I dont agree with him leaving but he was pushed.
ReplyDeleteI don't think Rosasharn meant it like that. I think she just wanted the best for the baby and her family. Connie did have a lot of pressure put on him but so did Rosasharn. Just because she wasn't the one working does not mean she has a lot of responsibility, especially with the baby. You know, what she asked for really was not much. The man needs to have a supporting job and a house and money to be in charge and take care of his family. The women depended on the men during this time. Women were not as independent as we are now. It was the mans duty to take care of his family and Connie was too chicken to even do that yet he made a promise by marrying her to stick by her side no matter what, to love and take care of. He promised her he would help take care of the baby and he didn't do that. He was foolish. If he could not have met the deal they made then he should have been man enough to tell her and work as much as the Joad family did but he didn't even try. He got scared because it was tough in California but life is tough. You have to be strong enough to survive.

DeleteI totally saw Connie leaving way before chapter 20 but what really shocked me is that they hadn't even settled down completely, they were only in the valley for a day and he left. I personally figured he'd leave within a week of being there, but all dream talking in the family has to eventually wear on a person's nerves and I think he left before he possible exploded from it.
