Dimmesdale's Death

I have to say, I really wasn't expecting Dimmesdale to go out like that. The fact that he died on the platform with Hester and Pearl by his side was really touching, and pretty sad to boot. Part of me wonders how the town will recover, and part is worried about what will happen to Pearl and Hester.

  2. I have to admit that I was surprised that Dimmesdale had admited everything. At least he was able to feel free and not have to carry that guilt around anymore. What I thought was touching was the fact that he finally wasn't ashamed or scared of being seen with Hester and Pearl. Especially since he asked Pearl, "dear little Pearl, wilt thou kiss me now?"

  3. I for one was glad for Dimmesdale's death, only because it was pure. Due to the fact he finally confessed in being a part of adultery with Hester. I found it symbolic that he dies after his public confession in the way of, his now non existence on earth and the non existing burden of hiding. If that makes sense.

  4. I think it was kind of symbolic. Being on the platform where he should have been during Hester's trial, and finally receiving the penalty for his sin. It kind of hints at the bible: for the wages of sin is death, but the gift of god is eternal life.
