Chapter 15

Steinbeck uses this chapter as a descriptive chapter. This is because we get to see, through steinbecks description, what the gas stations and restaurants that were on the road to California had to deal with. The employees of these establishments seemed puzzled because of the amount of people that they saw heading west. They were also wanted answers to questions such as, where they come from, and why they are heading west, simply because they had never seen anything like that before. This chapter also gave us a clue as to how people acted and reacted toward the traveling families, through the eyes of the waitress, the cook, and the truck drivers. Toward the end of the chapter we see how a man would like to buy a loaf of bread, for his family, under the normal price, which gives us an idea of how poor these families were and how much they were struggling on this long journey to California.

  1. Yes, great analysis but are these families necessarily poor or are they just overthinking about themselves and their loved ones rather than on their journey to California?

  2. Once again, what is wrath and does the title using grapes affects the roots of the wrath of the people or of the world as of being America towards the characterin the novel?

  3. When the waitress lowered the price of the bread and candies to the poor family heading West, it supported the theme of "The Multiplying Effects of Selfishness and Altruism". Do you agree? Not only is the waitress and the cook feeling sorry for the way the family is suffering, but I can conclude that so are the readers.

    1. I agree. One thing I found interesting, that played on the theme you mentioned. Was how unaware the waitress was of her own selfishness, until she saw the starving children staring at the candy. Furthermore, it was interesting to see how the waitresses kindness was returned to her by the truckers. However, what point is Steinbeck trying to make by going on to mention the cook resetting the slot machines, before ending the chapter?
