Chapter 2
The truck drivers characterization of Tom Joad had varied throughout the whole ride. From the beginning the truck driver had known that Tom had just got out of prison, but since he agreed to give Tom a ride he must of thought that he was harmless. However, little things throughout the ride gave the truck driver a suspicion that Tom could've of been in jail for being aggressive. For example, how he noticed that Toms hands looked like that of one who had been put through labor. Another example is when Tom started drinking and revealing more about himself. When Tom started talking openly the truck driver knew Tom was someone not to be messed with and therefore did not ask him any more questions. When Tom told him how he'd been in prison was when the truck driver became defensive and feared that Tom could be threatening. By the end of the ride the truck driver said nothing more about the matter and decided not to interfere in fear of Tom Joad. But I wondered why the truck driver gave Tom a ride in the first place, taking a risk knowing that Tom was just released from prison.

I'm not sure that that was his first thought, that he just came out of prison, but he did feel that there was something off about Tom. So he gave him the ride with caution, and hoped that there wasn't anything bad about him.
ReplyDeleteIn the book Tom insinuated that the truck driver knew that he had just been released from prison. However the truck driver became defensive about knowing that because he was afraid of what Tom might do

DeleteI understand now. I looked back on the book and saw that the truck driver knew that Tom had just been released, but was afraid to admit so.
DeleteWhen you say "What Tom might do" Tom sounds like a trained killer. Becuase this would have been a lot more interesting book if Tom just murdered the truck driver out of know where.
DeleteYes, the truck driver was very cautious and much too himself, but I perceive that he wasn't afraid of Tom due to Tom being an "average" hitchhiker.
ReplyDeleteI actually really liked that from the driver because at the end he really got to see Tom differently.
ReplyDeleteI like how Tom murdered a guy, went to jail, and still doesn't feel sorry. Just another win for the justice department. Also being a prisoner sounds a lot nicer than being a farmer in that chapter.
ReplyDeleteDo they give prisoners tobacco, alcohol, clothes, and money when they leave prison in this book?
ReplyDeleteAlso Tom guilt trips the truck driver into giving him a ride by twisting his words around.
ReplyDeleteIf the truck driver knew that Tom had been in jail, then I don't see any good explanation to why he gave him a ride? Did he find him interesting and wanted to know why Tom was in jail? Or was the truck driver afraid of what Tom might do (just like what Kimberly stated)? Overall, Tom seemed suspicious the whole ride and I also don't understand why they gave Tom all that stuff right out of prison. Can someone please explain?
