Chapter 3

Moving away from the Joads Steinbeck focuses on a turtle and its journey across the road. After observing the road the turtle started to cross the road, this symbolizes the start of the Joads' journey to California. However when on the road the turtle had a bit of difficulty getting across, this show the difficulty the Joads will face during their travel to California. One thing that got my attention in this chapter are the cars that the turtle encounters during it journey, since the turtle resembles the Joads I can to believe that the cars resembles problems or issues that will stop the Joads from advancing, but I doubt that these problems will stop them since they have each other.

  1. Wow great analysis. Yes they do have each other as well but most of their problems are internal of themselves and the legacy they hold as we will see in further chapters the Joads will eventually face differences as of JC and Tom did. Furthermore the cars do not symbolize a massive change but they do symbolize change and betrayal as of the woman that dove past the turtle.

  2. I believe the cars symbolize the wealthy class and banks. Landowners and banks are one of the biggest problems they had to face, just like the turtle being in danger due to the traveling cars. In this chapter, Steinbeck emphasizes the scorching hot pavement faced by the turtle. This symbolizes the severe weather that the farmers are going through.

  3. I prefer to take a more general approach towards this analogy. I believe the turtle embodies the people, and their mindset of pushing on, no matter the obstacle. The turtle never looks back, or takes it's eyes off what is in front of it. The turtle knows there are threats to its existence and its journey. However, the trutle never stops to ponder why those threats are there. Overall, the turtle is single minded, and focucses on nothing but what it's trying to achieve. There will be those that help the turtle's journey, such as the women who swerved to miss it on the high way. There will also be those who try to hurt or end the turtle's journey, like the guy who swerved to hit the turtle. There will even be those who simply sidetrack or change the turtle's journey, like Tom did. I believe all of these events are foreshadowing the fate of Tom and his family.
