Today in class we read chapter 3 of
The Scarlet Letter. In this chapter Hester refuses to give up the name of baby's father to the council. Why is this? If it was a one night stand or someone that meant very little to her, she would've probably given him up. Wouldn't you? I think whoever she committed adultery with, she has strong feelings for them or some type of connection with them. Now, if it is the reverend then maybe she just didn't give him up because of who he and the type of punishment he would get.
I agree, she is protecting him. If she named him, he would definitely be forced to renounce his "vows" to God.
ReplyDeleteBut how do we know he has vows with God? Maybe it's someone else.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Andrea, why would you commit Adultery is the person didnt mean anything to you? However, how do we know that this person didnt pressure her "in the name of God" of falsely persuaded her in anyway. Maybe shes not the one who truely deserves the punishment
