In chapter 5 we start to notice the adulterer child whom is named Pearl. Pearl is an outgoing child and is very playful. From what has been mentioned in class we can conclude that Pearl is a sign of hope and remorse from her mothers actions. Her mothers symbol of sin may not be sin rather it will be a sign of dignity if and only if Pearl comes out to be a "star" then her mother may not be shamed for all eternity after all...but hey miracles happen...disagreements?
I feel like there's a lot of definitions about Pearl becoming a "star" in comparison to her mother. It's how Hester interprets Peral's behavior of it being good or not. So yes, I agree that anything can happen.
ReplyDeleteI disagree. Hester's shame doesn't depend on how pearl turns out. The fact is the village won't accept Pearl, no matter how she ends up. Hester's shame depends on herself, I believe. It's how stong she can be, and how justified she feels in her actions. Hester and her daughter will always be outcasts, but that's not what matters. What matters is how Hester raises Pearl, and what she instills in her. Hester's and Pearl's status in society is never going to change. But how they choose to act on that fact, that will determine their character.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Chris, Hesters' shame wont dissappear with the outcome of Pearl and they suddenly be accepted into the society again. They will always be outcast no matter what as a result of Hesters actions. However, is the fact of gaining that dignity of having raised such an amzing gift such as Hester that the village will resent.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with Chris, the village won't accept Hester and Pearl no matter what. Also Hester's shame isn't going to disappear based on how Pearl turns out because they will still be outcast and that isn't going to change.
ReplyDeleteEven though the town won't accept Pearl even if she turns out to be the example of a "perfect child", Hester will still have to deal with consequences if Pearl starts causing trouble. So Hester is kind of forced to raise Pearl as a well taught young lady, or else they will take her from her.
