What do you think about Chillingworth?

After reading chapter 4 today in class, we got to know more about Chillingworth. He seemed very reasonable and compassionate about the situation with Hester and the affair. Towards the end of the chapter, I think that he gives this "evil" vibe about wanting to know who the guy Hester committed the affair with. Why would he give this image to Hester? She did seem to scare her after letting her know why he wanted him.

  1. Well to put this into perspective. He journeyed across the Atlantic ocean, was somehow caught by native americans in presumably some kind of battle, and was a prisoner to the native americans and away from his normal life for 2 years. The first thing he sees upon entering the town he's been trying to reach this entire time, is his wife. (Who he had hoped that one day would love and accept him despite her initial protest to this marriage) Holding a child on a stage, with an A for adultery embroided on her chest. If chillingworth had any hope of a happy life I suppose that was the final nail in the coffin. He survived it all, only to be met with a punch to the gut emotionally. It seems the reality hit him. All his hope turned to bitterness, even though he understood his own mistakes, and how unbelievable his aspirations truly were, whatever hope he still held was obliterated, and poisoned. And so he seeks an outlet for his pain and anger. That outlet being the accomplice to the act of adultery. So it only seems like a further slap to the face that Hester is so adament of withholding his name. While chillingworth was alone, with no one to love. Hester was building a bond so strong, she is willing to sacrafice herself for her lover. I supppose chillingworth should have expected something along these lines, since he was gone for so long. But it's hard not to be hateful and bitter in his position.

  2. I believe Maria that Chillibgworth just wanted to show his vengeance towards the man and by this Hester may give the name of her "baby-daddy" because eventually she will have lack sympathy.

  3. I don't really believe that once he knows who the "baby-daddy" is that he will just let him be and mind his own business.
