Chapter 13
I think chapter 13 slightly introduces what Casy was saying when he says he's been preaching for a while but he's realized there is something worse than the devil. notice everyone's life style and how the hard working men are always at the bottom, Casy was talking about capitalism. The big companies take in all the profit while the rest of society is hanging on by a thread. For example, the "yellow painted company stations" have oppressed the man that's been trying to run a small business. The man in turn oppresses the joad family without meaning to harm them but regardless the cycle goes on and creates a bitter society.

Yes great way to analyze the capitalist society in which the working men in the novel have shown but is it really capitalism turning to a form of communism?
ReplyDeleteNo it's not, communism and community are 2 different things. The people are growing together bacoming a bigger we but I have to disagree with you on the communist part in fact it's the opposite of you ask me.
DeleteI wonder if you could compare to what was happening with the Joad family to today. What you are saying, Fatima, sounds very familiar in our news. Do you agree?
ReplyDeleteI actually found really interesting history stories about how the families came together and they way they lived aside the road.
ReplyDeleteThe gas station man still had the oppurtunity to open up a gas station. But is it really the yellow painted company stations fault that the guy set up his business a few miles away from them? What's more the guy tried to imitate the exact thing he so despised. I think the man's own poor decisions are to blame for his failures. There's so many ways he could've been different and unique, but instead he followed those already successful, and tried to imitate their success.
ReplyDeleteYes, I totally agree with Chris but the past is unchangeable while the future has change and possibly better forms of life and self-worth.
ReplyDeleteum, ok?
DeleteWhat do you mean by "creates a bitter society"? I agree with you on the blog, but can you please explain that part to me? In my opinion, all the discrimination and hurtful behavior the people moving West, including the Joad's, just makes the poor unite even more. The more the wealthy class, landowners, or cops treat the poor badly, the harder they are going to fight back.
