Transcendentalism

" I know the rules, but the rules don't know me" -Eddie Vedder

Transcendentalism is a very strong movement, the quote above really captures what transcendentalism means. It causes people to question themselves and society. It challenges everything you believe in and it challenges you to follow your own path. Being a transcendentalist you challenge anything and everything; no belief, fact, or idea is set in stone. You go against the status quo and in my opinion all of us have a little transcendentalism in us or have experienced it at some point in their life. In our society today there is more freedom to express yourself; we can try to be ourselves and find what makes us, us. With that being said there are still things in our life that keeps us from being who we are, there are a lot of things that distract us or take us away from our true selves. Comment bellow what you believe is a distraction in our society today and why you think that.

  1. Material objects are probably the biggest distraction for us. We become so obsessed with the small meaningless pleasures, and these almost artificial reactions of pleasure.Human interaction is probably what can give us the most genuine moments of happiness. But as we advance as a society, human interaction becomes more foreign and hostile. Most phliosophy focuses on understanding who we are and where we came from better. But as the small distractions build, we become less focused on these questions. We as a race are less and less concerned with these unanswerable questions everyday. These questions that drive us. We choose to lose ourselves in these unfufilling and shallow pleasures, these material goods.

  2. A distraction to society is the media because the media massively "sugar-coats" stories in order to achieve profit which then causes many people to believe many things are wrong while others differ in opinions which causes massive debates, riots, and protests which are the basis for new thinking which embodies possible racism and hatred towards certain religions such as Islam being a terroristic threat as well as youth have a reason to hate certain things rather than being taught to understand the subject at hand...so in reality the media is a main cause of society becoming corrupt because it has been in current issues throughout all time.

  3. I agree with both Chris and Ali, both of you guys made good points as to why you feel material objects and media is a distraction for our society.
