If the setting of
Light in August was placed in our present society, what do you think will be different in the book? I personally thing that Lena will not be isolated or looked down on for being pregnant as much as she is right now because in today's society the stigma associated with people who get pregnant before is marriage has greatly dwindled. What else do you think will be different? <3
I think that Lena would still be criticized, but not as much. Also, since there is more diversity in today's society, Christmas wouldn't feel as isolated as he used to be for being biracial.
ReplyDeleteI agree Kate, Lena would not be as criticized by society. She would still be labeled "promiscuous", but she would be accepted. There are many people like her today. Joe Christmas would fit in society perfectly well, being "mixed" is seen as something good.
DeleteYep, especially because pregnancy is not only accepted by adults, by teens who are influenced my main stream television shows such as Teen Mom. The women on Teen Mom are not scrutinized, but "rewarded" millions of dollars for concieving a child. --Nicole H
DeleteI think that Christmas wouldn't feel them he needs to find a society where he is accepted. The whole racial aspect of the book would be different. I think Lena would still be looked at the same way.
ReplyDeleteI think that her state of pregnancy would be labeled as a normal thing in our generation. Many years have passed and traditions have been broken, violated, or changed throughout the years. I don't think she will get criticized as much but she will be lectured about what she has done wrong and told of many other options she could have chosen.
ReplyDeleteWell, in today's society you don't have everyone looking down at an independent pregnant woman, however, i believe it would have been a tough journey still even though it's a bit easier today. She would have more support, not just financially but also with family and friends.
ReplyDeleteI believe today's society will not treat her as bad as they do in hers but for sure they'll find something to criticize about her. Nothing will really change it's just about perspective. Maybe she'll get a little support from others but she would still be alone looking for someone who isn't there anymore.
