Overall, while the reading was tedious at times, I liked reading
Light in August. I felt the book taught many lessons, such as the fact a person should never run away from their past. Did you like the book?Who was your favorite character in Light in August? Who did you despise? What do you think was the biggest Lesson the book taught us? Do you think the book was better than
The Scarlet Letter?
I think my least favorite character was Christmas; although he was very complex at times. I personally felt as if his actions were predictable. He is an introverted, self-loathing guy who isolates himself from society, of course he is going to despise others and resort to violence.
ReplyDeleteYeah I agree that Christmas is a complex character, but I also feel he was a victim of society. Both of his parents died before he was born, his grandpa hated him and the kids in the Orphanage. Christmas never had a break, while I feel he could have learned from his past. He really did not belong in the society, He was too white to be black and too Black to be white.
DeleteI did like Light in August although, I don't think that I liked it better than The Scarlet Letter. I'm not sure which character was my least favorite or favorite. The greatest lesson that I learned from this book was that we shouldn't run away from our past, it will follow us everywhere we go. We can never leave our past because it is what made us into who we are today and who we will be in the future.
ReplyDeleteYes I agree Roxana, I loved Light in August, but it was not better than the Scarlet Letter. That is a major lesson the book taught us.
DeleteI liked the book. I can say its Byron. He offered to stay with Lena in the end to take care of the baby and I thought that that was a very powerful part of the story. even though the baby wasn't his, he still offered to be in the babies life.
ReplyDeleteI agree Tonda, Byron is an amazing man. The things he did for Lena were remarkable. I also liked how he was one of the only character that did not run away from himself. Overall I loved the book as well.
DeleteI would say my favorite character is Lena. I like how she is different from the rest of the society. She makes her own rules and accepts the outcomes of her decisions. She does not let people's perception defer her from doing what she wishes. In a way she exhibits transcendentalist ideologies. I still prefer the scarlet letter probably because it was less tedious to analyze and the plot was a little more engaging to me and easier to follow.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I would prefer The Scarlet Letter. Light in August has deep symbolism, however, The Scarlet Letter caught my attention because I am able to sympathize more with the character’s emotions rather than in Light in August. My favorite character had to be Lena Grove. She is humble and very courageous. She’s a true transcendentalist, not letting the opinions of others bring her down, or stop her from what she wants to do. It’s not everyday that a pregnant woman walks hundreds of miles to find the father of her child.
ReplyDeletePersonally, Christmas was my favorite character because he taught me that we should except are past and who we are if we want to live a happy life. the Scarlet Letter was my favorite.
