Byron and Hightower

What do you feel is the reasoning behind Hightower's strong disapproval  for Byron's assisting Lena to find Joe Brown? Perhaps a sense of jealousy,  or is he looking out for his friend's best interest?

  1. Hightower mentions that Byron is doing evil because he's very close to commiting sin. His reaction might also be that he fears losing the person who he has connection with.

    1. I agree with Janeth. I don't think Hightower's actions are out of jealousy. I feel he is actually looking out for the interest of his friend and trying to protect him from what he believes to be a sinful situation.

  2. I agree with Janeth. Hightower connects with Byron, and they've become friends throughout the book. In all entirety, maybe Hightower's strong disapproval for Byrons assisting Lena to find Joe Brown is simply because he's looking out for his friends best interest as you put it.

  3. Jealousy... I could definitely see that being the motive behind Hightower's disapproval of Byron's relationship in general with Lena. Hightower's wife had an extramarital affair and died; it's safe to say that his love history hasn't been the best. He could feel a sense of envy of Byron's connection with a woman.

  4. I disagree with sierra, I think its more looking out for his friend then it is jealousy. Hightower's past experience with women might be the reason for his disapproval in an effort to help Byron not experience the same fate as him.

  5. I believe that Hightower's actions toward Byrons involvement with Lena is purely becuase he is looking out for him. Hightower knows that Byron is falling in love with lena and he just feels that a person unwelcome from society as Lena is will only bring trouble to Byron's life.

  6. I think Hightower is looking out for the best interest of his friend, because even after Byron goes to get Joe Brown, Hightower tells Lena to "Send him away." (Faulkner 411) Since he knows that Byron has yet to live life, while Lena has, and he does not want Byron to miss out on the certain aspects that come with life that he will if he stays with Lena.
