Why does Byron live a routine life?
In chapter 3, he states in a conversation to Hightower...
"I don't know...I reckon that's just my life."
Thinking to himself 'But I know now why it is, it is because a fellow is more afraid of the trouble he might have than he ever is of the trouble he's already got. He'll cling to trouble he's used to before he'll risk a change.' (Faulkner 75)
Do think something dramatic happened to him in his past for him to think this way?
If so, what?
If not, why do you think he is the way he is?
I feel like we don't know enough about Byron yet to answer this question. While something could have caused him to be this way, it is also very likely that he is just a routine guy who's too scared or shy to ever try to break his routine.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the first part that Vanessa says, however I don't believe that Bryon is a shy guy. Sure he has a routine life style, but I think as we read on we'll be able to conclude why. Something with his past has structured the way he is now, and maybe his boundaries between doing different things or taking risks are very limited.
ReplyDeleteI dont know if anyone else has picked up on this but Faulkner focuses alot on past relationships in all his characters and to me he likes to focus on how they deal with their emotions and interactions with other people in the present. Lena by naively chasing Lucas Burch/Joe Brown, Hightower simply ignoring other people, Joe Christmas acting aggressively to others, and in this case having Byron life a routine life so that he can never put himself in a position similar to one that may have happened in his past.
ReplyDeleteAnything could of happened to Byron like how he was raised or an experience that led him to a routine life, but I agree with Vanessa that we don't know enough about Byron to answer this question. Also, Brian I have also noticed that Faulkner does show the emotions and interactions of the characters.
ReplyDeleteI agree that we do not have enough information on Byron. Though there has to be something to have caused his routine lifestyle.
ReplyDeleteIt is possible that there is something that caused Byron to live this way however, as readers we have not yet been revealed to that. Although, the idea did catch my interest and as we read the book, this question will be there for many of us to answer if there even is a reason.
