A Coward?

We all seem to be calling Dimmesdale a coward and that he should just tell everyone and get it over with. However put yourself in his shoes. If you had a secret, such as his, would you tell everyone that you did something horrible? In a community such as theirs, the role he plays in this community.

  1. Honestly, I think that I would tell the secret and get it over with. when an individual keeps holding heir darkest secrets and expressions inside, who knows when they are going to burst everything out. I understand that he is not proud of what he has done, but so is Hester. Dimmesdale should have been the man he is, confess his sin immediately, and stood along with Hester to receive punishment for he committed adultery as well.

    1. I disagree. I would have just be so afraid and would have let the guilt eat at me. However, Dimmesdale as someone strong, someone who understands the pain he is going through.

    2. True Adam, especially because if Dimmesdale does confess the truth, the towns people may punish him even more than Hester for not confessing to his sins.

  2. At first, I probably wouldn't either because I would be scared but if the guilt was eating me alive, then I would speak up. However, I can sympathize with Dimmesdale because the community he lives in does not seem all too loving and kind, so I can see where he is coming from by not wanting to say anything.

    1. yes, like if he did something equally has horrible and you had to tell your parents but you were afraid to tell them because of what they might do to you or thing less of you.

    2. I agree Pamela, I would be afraid to tell a secret such as that, but if a secret was eating me up as much as that I would reveal it.yeah if I had a secret so bad thst it was eaten up inside, I would not withhold it from my parents. Dimmesdales secret is causing him to be physically sick. When something is hurting you that much, you must find a way to release it. In the puritan time it would have been difficult to release a secret about adultery, but if Dimmedale cannot reveal his secret to anyone in that town without getting judge, then he should move and find a better way to deal with the guilt.

  3. Adam, that is a great analogy between not telling parents something because we are afraid...and is it ok if we are cowards at some point in our lives because of it?

  4. Brianda Curiel: I can relate to Dimmesdale reasoning to not say anything about his secret because during this time it wasn't just a sin but it was publicly shamed. I don't think I'll have the guts to say a secret like that in front of anyone if I knew how I would end.
