My favorite quote in Chapter 9 was when Roger Chillingworth and Reverend Dimmesdale were conversing and the Dimmesdale states,' " I could be well content, that my labors, and my sorrows, and my sins, and my pains, should shortly end with me, and what is earthly of them be buried in my grave, and the spiritual go with me to my eternal state, rather than that you should put your skill to the proof in my behalf" '(100). I find this statement quite strong because he truly knows that if he dies all his secrets and hidden pain will go with him and be terminated for good. What is your guy's opinion on this quote!

I agree. Dimmesdale seems to be suffering from all the guilt he's been hiding from everyone. So, death for him is kind of like a way to put his secrets and all his pain to an end without letting anyone know the actual reasons why.

DeleteI agree, it's like death is an escape route so no one will know his secret.
DeleteYeah, its almost like he is just waiting to die so he doesn't have to hide this secret any longer.
DeleteI love this quote as well, Dimmesdale is a sentimental man. He knows that only God can completely deliver him from his sins. Dimmesdale knows no earthly physician can heal his guilty heart.
ReplyDeleteYep, Dimmesdale would rather die with his iniquities knowing he hasn’t tarnished Roger or his reputation because he knows that no man can heal him.
DeleteI agree and I could relate. Dimmesdale if holding so much shame and regret inside that it is slowly beating him up. He believes that God can forgive him of his sin. I believe that he needs to develop some sort of forgiveness to get through what he has done in good terms.

DeleteI agree with you Brianda, his secrets will go to the grave with him and also if that were to occur, then Hester would be left alone with that secret and humiliation.

ReplyDeleteI thought this quote was strong, Dimmesdale was scared to tell everyone his secrets, he is full of guilt. He thinks that if he died then all of his secrets and guilt will die with him. The truth is that everyone can still find out about his secret and they can still judge him. Everything will happen the exact same way except for the fact that he died. I guess in the end it won't matter if people find out because for Dimmesdale his secrets will die along with him as well as everything else. He won't be able to know that people are judging him for his sins.
ReplyDeleteI think in this quote Dimmesdale is saying how prepared he is to take his secrets to the grave. Due to the humiliation and dishonor he will face, he prefers to atone for his sins only with his heavenly father and no one else. He states in this quote how his secrets will be buried with him, this however leaves Hester to bear all the shame and guilt alone.
ReplyDeleteI believe that he states that he will die and his pain shall go with him.
