The Scarlet Leter (Chapter's 4 & 5 reading)

Assuming that you already read Chapter's 4 & 5, what are your initial thoughts on the plot, and, if possible, make a couple predictions as to what might happen in the future.

  1. I like how Hester and her husband finally come face to face in chapter 4 and in chapter 5 I think it funny how she is needed for her needle work even if she is despised in the community.

    1. True, it's interesting how the author “throws her crumb” giving her the valuable trait of needlework. It's probably the only reason why people still reach out to her.

  2. After having read Chapters 4 & 5, I felt sympathy for Hester Prynne's daily afflictions. Not only does community scorn at her as she passes by, but parents instill the belief in their children that Hester is evil. Which results in children telling fabricated stories of her, distorting the truth, making Hester a bigger target for scrutiny. If I had to guess what would happen in the future, I think that Hester’s ex-husband might possibly get the revenge he’s been seeking, although i can't imagine how he can possibly hurt her any further than the torment of the unrelenting town she endures on a daily basis.

    1. I agree with you Nicole. It is kind of hard to imagine what else Hester can go through that will hurt her because like you said she is tormented on a daily basis.

    2. I agree, when I was reading the chapter I was trying to imagine how difficult and sad her life is. She has to live everyday doing the same thing, dealing with everyone saying bad and made up things about her. I think she is strong because of what she deals with, not everyone can handle what she is going through.

  3. Chapter 4 was actually my favorite since we finally find out who this man actually is,which is her husband. I agree with Nicole I don't think there is nothing more than can really hurt her since she was put to shame in front of everyone even the man whom she was married to.

  4. Chapter 4 was a great chapter. I enjoyed reading about the physician. I really like how he apologized to her for taking away her youth. Hester hurt him deeply by cheating on him, but he knew he was a fool for expecting Hester to love him. Chapter 5 was a very interesting chapter as well.I love how hypocritical the haughty townspeople are, they shame Hester for her transgressions, yet they still buy from her. I predict that in the future, Hester's lover will visit her.

  5. In chapter 4 we get to learn the characters relationship and attitudes through their dialogue. Hester promises to keep Chillingworth's identity a secret but I feel like this oath might bring some trouble in the future. In chapter 5 Hester supports herself and her daughter by working as a seamstress. Yet, everyone that buys from her discriminates her as well. From only reading this chapter I predict that Hester may either strike back and get back the respect she deserves as any other individual should receive or that her true lover, Dimmesdale, will reunite with Hester and his daughter.

    2. That would be pretty intriguing if Hester “struck back at the people who have wronged her”, but yet again she is an already hated public figure. Lashing back at the community she wants to be apart of will do her no good for her or her baby’s tarnished reputation.

  6. In the begging of chapter 4 Roger Chilingworth approaches Hester with a sweet and kind behavior showing the type of person he is then in the end he becomes furious with Hester for not telling him who the guy is which changes his whole exterior making the reader (well I) second guess his personality. My guess would be that the people treat her badly since no one will talk to her and she lives far from society/the people.

  7. In the beginning of chapter 4, Roger Chillingworth visits Hester in prison. He tries to get the name of the man whom she had an affair with. She refuses to tell him. In return, he becomes angry and full of vengeance to find out who the man is. She later stays in the town and becomes involved with helping others. I believe that Roger will begin to stalk Hester until he find out the identity of the man who got her pregnant.

  8. Having read Chapters 4 and 5, I found Hester's encounter with her husband quite intriguing. I still get the feeling that Roger still loves Hester because he did not take any vengeance out on her or Pearl. He also sort of blames himself because he left her alone for two years. I predict that Hester and Dimmesdale have a confrontation and it is revealed that he is Pearl's father. And eventually Roger will find this out too
