Taking it as though everyone read chapter 17, The Pastor and His Parishioner, What do you guys think of Hester's plan? Do you believe that it will benefit Dimmesdale, Hester, and Pearl if they leave? What do you think will happen if they do leave? Will Chillingworth keep their secret?
Yes I believe it would benefit Hester, Pearl and Dimmesdale greatly if they left the town. All three of them can move to a place where they can be a family, without being judged for their past transgressions. Peal is stigmatized as a product of the Scarlet Letter in the town, if they move Pearl will finally be seen as mischievous little girl she is. Hester would gain her own identity and the Scarlet A will be a part of he past and Dimmesdales. Even if Chillingworth tells, if Hester and Dimmesdale move then the revelation won't effect them as much.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Goodness. I hope that they will live happy lives after they move.
DeleteI think that Hester's plan is a clever idea because if she, Pearl, and Dimmesdale finally leave, they can create a new path at last- a new life. Like Goodness said, they can finally be a family without being stigmatized by others around them. If Chillingworth really acknowledged how much he has changed unfortunately, I think he probably would keep it a secret, so Hester's plan could benefit her family.
ReplyDeleteI think it will help them greatly to leave and start anew, just cause they won't have to keep everything a secret they can be a regular family. Although it might not affect them greatly Dimmesdale might still have guilt even though he left. I don't think they'll be able to leave that easily though due to the fact that Chillingworth knows their secret. We also don't know how the community will react if Chillingworth does tell everybody. The community might put a harsher punishment on Hester and say that she manipulated him into doing it.
ReplyDeleteI like your interpretation John. I would have never thought of that.
DeleteI think leaving is the best option for them. It gives them the opportunity to start new in a different society as a family without any stigmatization. However I don't think they will be able to leave. Chillingworth still seeks revenge and I think his final act of vengeance would be to expose Dimmesdale's sin and foil their plans of leaving.

ReplyDeleteIt will benefit all of them but I think Chillingworth, because he is on the path of vengeance, will try to follow them and ensure that they are never happy.
ReplyDeleteAgreed, I doubt Chillingsworth will let the couple get away without revealing Dimmesdale's hidden truth to the townspeople, especially because Dimmesdale is a pastor, if the town chooses to punish him the retribution will be far more arduous.
