Pearl

In Chapter Six of The Scarlet Letter we get the to see Hester's child Pearl. We also see how much care Hester has for this child. " For so had Hester called her; as a name expressive of her aspect, which had nothing of the calm, white, unimpassioned lustre that would be indicated by the comparison. But she named the infant "Pearl", as being of great price,- purchased with all she had"( Hawthorne, 2005, p. 74). Everyone believes that this baby is a devils child because she was born out of sin, however, Hester does not believe so. She believes that something good came out of this all, the pain she went through , embarrassment, and being casted away from everyone: Pearl. I really enjoyed this chapter, it was so heartwarming and beautiful. Hawthorne used such vivid imagery, I felt as if I was with Hester watching Pearl grow up.

  1. I agree, Hester believes her baby is the only good thing that came out of her sin. I also enjoyed reading about Pearl growing older. I find Pearl to be a unique, precious child. I am captivated by the fact that the townspeople think that Pearl might be a witch. I love how Pearl stands up for herself in front of the little towns kids.

  3. I took note of this passage while we were reading. It really spoke out to me. Hawthorne did a great job of gratitude. Hester becomes much more accepting of Pearl and she becomes more committed to her. She believe that Pearl was a blessing even though she committed adultery.

    2. Indeed, she does not view Pearl as a product of sin like everyone else, but as gift from God himself.

  4. I agree. Hester sees Pearl as an immortal flower, a treasure she payed dearly for. I think Hester takes pride in Pearl due to how she adorns her garments and deeply values her. It is a true example of motherly love, the kind that never waivers no matter the circumstances.

    1. Yes, Hester did pay a heavy price, but it was worth it in the end for she got a wonderful child.

  5. I agree with the feeling of watching Pearl growing up, as if we were there.
Even though Hester is paying a huge price for having her, it's worth every moment in Hester's life to be able to call Pearl her child.

    1. Yeah, it reminds me of the symbolism behind Pearl's name, like an actual pearl in a clam, they are usually singular and rare. To Hester, Pearl is the single being on earth which gives her the will live in such a callous world.

  7. I agree. Prynne often says that Pearl is a blessing from God- that God gave her that child. I also find the reason behind Pearl's name to be kind of adorable because she's Prynne's treasure. She's irreplaceable to Prynne.

  8. Pearl is worth going through all of that humiliation and she is the reason why Hester continues moving forward. Though, she does sometimes question her actions but always remembers the good outcome which is Pearl.

    1. I agree with you Reyna, when I was reading the chapter about Pearl I was thinking that Pearl was the most important thing to Hester. Everything that Hester went through was worth it because she got Pearl in the end
