A Burdens weight
when you've been holding something in a secret of some sort or a guilt it eats you away till you get rid of it.I think we all can agree on that. In the Scarlet Letter we see this relief with Hester and Dimmesdale. When one rids of this guilt or burden its like your a free of some supernatural power you no longer feel the weight of this unnatural weight."The decision once made, a glow of strange enjoyment threw its flickering brightness over the trouble of his breast. It was the exhilarating effect-upon a prisoner just escaped from the dungeon of his own heart-of the breathing the wild , free atmosphere of an unredeemed, unchristianized, lawless region." We see the effect of this release weight which burden carries now he no longer lives this lie and is set free not physically but from within himself."The stigma gone, Hester heaved a long, deep sigh, in which the burden of shame and anguish departed from her spirit.O exquisite relief! She had not known the weight, until she felt the freedom!" She has lost this weight which she had carried with her for seven years not knowing what this supernatural weight was or that it existed.Do you guys believe in this sort of thing being possible or is it that there are somethings which nothing can comfort us?

I believe that something like this can be possible. It's easy for a person to feel that sign of relief. For example, it's like a person holding in a secret for a long time and the one thing they really want to do is tell someone to get it off their chest. And once they do, it's like a weight is lifted. As shown through Hester and Dimmesdales experience in The Scarlet Letter. Although they do feel a sudden urge of freedom, I still don't believe that they really are free of what they did, nor will they ever truly be.
ReplyDeleteI really like the part of that quote, "She had not known the weight, until she felt the freedom." I absolutely think that you can hold onto a feeling, such as guilt, for so long that it becomes a part of you. If you wore a badge that represented your shame for long enough you would eventually become immune to its effect.
ReplyDeleteI also agree that something like this can happen because i see a secret as putting yourself in prison, but once you reveal that secret your free from the prison that you placed yourself into.
ReplyDeleteI agree that there is much comfort and relief in revealing something which you have hidden for so long. When you have a secret there is always part of you that wants to tell someone, because if you don't it will consume you from the inside out.
