"It is a curious subject of observation and inquiry, whether hatred and love be not the same thing at the bottom." (Hawthorne, 213)
What is your opinion of this quote?...Is there a fine line between the love and hate? or are they relatively one in the same?
I did not say they were the same,I was asking if you think they could be...I think there is a fine line between the two, and that they can contrast each other so much so that they seem to be opposites. I also believe one would not exist without the other.
ReplyDeleteI think that love and hate are very similar in the sense that it takes the same kind of dependence on another person to be able to establish a relationship based on such a powerful emotion. That quote continues, "Each, in its utmost development, supposes a high degree of intimacy and heart-knowledge." I've never thought of it in such a way but I think Hawthorne brings up a really interesting point.
ReplyDeleteYou pretty much stated what I wanted to say (applauds).
