Too me yes it is a hoax I personally believe that the witch trials are meant to eliminate people with whom others have grudges with. I also find a problem that people like the Putnams and Parris can use their daughters as a means of eliminating their foes by ordering them to accuse them. Furthermore, I find it hard to believe that Tituba confesses and suddenly everyone has a come to Jesus moment where people are being randomly accused.
Yes, I also agree it is a hoax but I don't believe the motive is to gain power. I believe it is an false explanation to things that they have yet to understand about the world. A form of control.
I wouldn't see it as control. I would agree with Brian that its all to feel like they have some kind of power over the person they dislike. I would also see it as having power over an authoritative figure. The fact that they are given attention by the men used by God means something to those people. Regarding Tituba, she just wanted to live.
I agree with both Janeth and Brian. We could see it through Abigail's accusations especially Elizabeth and Proctor."I‘ll tell you what‘s walking Salem—vengeance is walking Salem... This warrant‘s vengeance..." (Miller, 2007) Both Elizabeth and Proctor knew who had accused them and why.
