The story has entertained my interest so far. Some connections i feel that can be made between The Scarlet Letter and The Crucible is in the character ulterior motives we've been exposed to thus far. Any ideas?
I'm actually at a loss on this question I can easily see ulterior motives in the Crucible but I cannot recall any instance of an ulterior motive from the Scarlet Letter's characters save perhaps Chillingworth befriending Dimmesdale.
i also see revenge playing a big part in both the scarlet letter and the crucible. in the scarlet letter chilingworth is trying to get revenge on dimesdale for having an affair with his wife. In the crucible Proctor had an affair with abigail but chooses to stay with his wife. Abigail is now trying to get revenge on Proctor by accusing elizabeth to be a with
I do see an ulterior motive in the character of Danforth. He refuses to fully listen to the claims made by Proctor and Hale as he dismisses them as challenging the court. However, I don't think that Danforth is all that concerned with the reputation of the court but he is much more worried about his own name being slandered. Danforth says that his signature is responsible for the incarceration and hanging of numerous people. If Proctor and Hale's claims are proven to be true, the entire village will lose trust in not only the court but the head of the court, Danforth, as well.
One connection I can think of is that both towns are influenced by a strict religious government.
