Dimmesdale
I kind of feel bad for Dimmesdale. By now we can pretty much conclude that Dimmesdale is Pearls father. Regardless of the fact that he has not confessed for the sin he has commited along with Hester he is still somewhat of a decent guy. He did try in helping Hester out within his abilities on now two occasions. In the begging of the book when Hester is being publicly condemned and Reverened Wilson proposes that they force Hester to confess her lover, Dimmesdale says no since it would be morally wrong to force a woman to confess her hearts secretes (or something along those lines I'm paraphrasing). I don't think Dimmesdale refused to force Hester into confessing to save himself but to avoid a serious harsh punishment on Hester. Then later Dimmesdale helps Hester keep Pearl. Overall Dimmesdale and Hester didn't have a "one night stand" as it's said today. According to Hester the moment was passionate. One night stands are not passionate. Hester and Dimmesdale must have had to be talking and "such" for quite a while so what they had must have been special to a degree right? Not just that but now Dimmesdale is slowly getting ill. I kind of feel as if this is a sign not of sin consuming Dimmesdale but as a sign of Dimmesdale suffering a broken heart. If what Dimmesdale had with Hester was serious as I suppose then maybe this inability to father his child and be with Hester due to his responsibility is slowly killing him

I agree I think he's like feeling remorseful and he's like hurt he cant be with the people he loves because it would be considered sinful in there community.
ReplyDeleteI personally think that Dimmesdale is doing his best in being a father and at the same time keeping it under wraps. We already see the stress the situation causes him
ReplyDeleteDimmesdale isn't even in Pearls life besides on Hester's occasions.
Deleteaw that is so sad. that may be true. poor guy. i also feel bad for him, i mean he can't tell. he could but that might just get them all killed! he does care for hester, you can tell, but i just wish he'd give her some acknowledgement.
ReplyDeleteGuys...he is totally the father of Pearl. I feel sorry for Dimmesdale because he is in a rough position. I mean his job is to carry the town to salvation and embody the true meaning of a Puritan yet that is not who he is. He is a regular person in this world. He is hiding himself because he knows no one will accept his true character and actions. I feel for the guy but then again, he needs to do what's right and discover and find his true self. I would rather die with dignity than nothing at all.
ReplyDeleteHe's still Puritan. He believes in it still very much of else he wouldn't give a ratts ass about keeping his reputation keen in the town.
DeleteI agree with Melissa. If he reveals his true identity, people would think of him differently. They might even loose the trust they have in him. Him being unable to spend time with his loved ones is killing him.
