Hester Prynne: A Transcendentalist

Hester’s actions are not even close to opposite of a transcendentalist thinker. Hester’s actions fallow transcendentalism very much. She is not fallowing the crowd because she unlike every other female in the town is not a puritan. Transcendentalism teaches not to fallow the crowd and be your own person which Hester is doing. Also Hester is not fallowing the town’s orders of giving up the father’s name so the child can have a father Hester refuses to speak and reveal anything. Transcendentalism also teaches not to conform to what people tell you to do so by not giving speaking about the questions she is asked Hester is not conforming, not doing what she is told she should do.

  1. I agree that Hester is very much a transcendentalist because she goes against the status quo.

  3. I agree that Hester embodies transcendentalism because she is alone to live her own life and not abide by anyone's rules or customs. She is able to live and think for herself.

  4. I don't think Hester has the mindset of a transcendentalist. Especially now reading more into the book. Because even though Hester did break the rules i don't believe she did it in a transcendentalists way of thinking. Hester broke the rules because she had an affair not because she sat their thinking to herself how can i think how can i think differently as a individual? She did it because she wanted to.You wouldn't say shoplifters are transcendentalist because they broke the rules. Also through out the book you constantly see how is ashamed of herself and her "sinful" act. Correct me if i'm wrong but I think Transcendentalist don't have remorse for their actions because its their own way of thinking so they wouldn't think that what they did is wrong. So to shorten it up i do not believe Hester is a transcendentalist for these reasons.
