A Witch Hunt

How is today's "Birther Movement" concerning our U.S. President like McCarthyism? The Salem Witch Trials? Are there any other connections you can make to our current society?

  1. The way the "Birther Movement" is like mcCarthyism is that Trump is accusing the U.S. president about not being a citizen.

  2. Birther Movement is about these THEORIES that Barack Obama not a natural-birth citizen. Like the Salem Witch trials it was all theories and accusations with no tangible evidence.

  3. The Birther Movement is like The Salem Witch Trials and McCarthyism because it causes people to be wary of each other and have distrust with one another. It also causes people to make false accusations. With the witch trials people were accusing each other of being a witch and with McCarthyism everyone was suspicious of who's a communist or not. The Birther Movement can cause people to wonder who else has as much or more power, but isn't a natural birth citizen.

  4. The Birther Movement is really similar to the Salem Witch Trials and McCarthyism because it is based on pure speculation and no evidence. It is basically accusations and statements with no ounce of proof fueled by the need to bring shame to Barack Obama's name and term as a President. It just leads people on wild goose chases.

  5. Like everyone else, the "Birther Movement" is easily relatably to both McCarthyism as well as the Salem Witch Trials for it consists of false accusations that lead to serious spreads of suspicion. There is no evidence to back this up whatsoever, and, with the "Birther Movement", makes Barack Obama nothing but a filthy liar, which is not the optimal truth.

  6. Brianda Curiel: The "Birther Movement" is relatable to McCarthyism because like Joshua said it is made up false accusations. People will do anything to gain power or publicly shame those with authority like President Barack Obama.

    1. Yeah I agree, the "Birther Movement" is like McCarthyism because they are both made up of false accusation. The people of the "Birther Movement" are accusing President Obama of not being a citicize, but they don't have any tangible evidence. Joseph McCarthy would also blame people of being communist without providing evidence. The witch unto were also filled with false accusations as well. The people during the Second Red Scare and the Salem Witch hunts would also blame others to protect themselves. I find it interesting how the some of the people that were accused of being witches in the Crucible were attempting witch craft.

    2. I agree, people will make false accusations to protect themselves or simply to gain power like Donald Trump or like people did during the Salem Witch Trials. Donald Trump wants to win the presidency and he thinks he will gain followers by accusing President Obama.

  7. The "Birther Movement" is like McCarthyism and the Salem Witch trials because both have people accusing others without evidence to support their "theories", as Adam calls them.

  8. Both topics, "Birther Movement" and McCarthyism, are related because they concern with false accusation. Saying that Obama was not born in America because people think is so, is the same idea as people in the 50's saying someone is communist because they think so, they believe they are. Which ties with the Salem Witch Trials, how anyone in the community says someone is a witch WITHOUT any facts to back it up.

  11. In our current society, similar to McCarthy, Donald Trump is an authoritative man with high power and opportunity to influence/convey positive dreams for the future to millions. Unfortunately, Trump revels in negativity and takes this as an advantage to call for the denial of Muslims to enter the United States. “In a statement released today, Republican candidate Donald Trump called for a "total and complete shutdown" of Muslims entering the United States until "our country's representatives can figure out what is going on" ("Donald Trump Calls for 'Total and Complete Shutdown' of Muslims Entering the US - ABC News," 2015). This form of McCarthyism solely relies on the preceding tragedies caused by Muslims, all whom have most likely have died or were persecuted. Parallel to McCarthy’s red scare, in order to receive political recognition, Trump claims that all Muslims entering the U.S. are radicals and are the main cause of terrorism, with no definitive evidence, generalizing an entire religion in his own intolerably ignorant ways.

  12. Today's "Birther Movement" is concerning our U.S. President like McCarthyism because people are falsely accusing him of things to make him look bad when they have no evidence to prove their point.

    1. I agree, but other than that Obama isn't letting himself be put down. He shows that he is strong and that he doesn't let those words and false accusing define who he is as a person. He chooses to be the high authority he is and keeps it that way as well. But in my opinion, I think the ones to actually start those rumors was Trump, him being the one that is so negative towards everyone out here in the U.S.

  14. The "Birther Movement" is affecting our president, Barack Obama. He's been accused for not being a US Citizen which is not entirely true at all. I believe that people just want to start things to cause a ruckus even though it is not needed at this point in time.
