What are you feelings towards the way that Pearl reacted to Hester's missing scarlet letter? Do you think she exaggerated? Or was she just being honest?

  1. It's understandable how difficult it is for young Pearl to adapt to change, especially from her own mother. The scarlet letter was the first thing she noticed from Hester and it's always been that way until that moment. So I thought her reaction was coherent, but a little exaggerated because she has to get used to it sooner or later.

  2. I believe that Pearl was not being exaggerating because she is a child after at all and a reaction like that is expected, however, she got too familiar, comfortable with this letter that without it on Hester's chest she does not accept Hester for Hester and only for the letter. She is afraid of change which is understandable because most us are afraid of change as well, making Pearl more sympathizing than before. Sooner or later Pearl will come to realize that the letter is not part of her mother anymore and that change is necessary for someone to progress in life.

  5. I believe that she was just being honest. Kids at a young age don't hesitate to express how they feel. I believe that it what Pearl did. She wasn't happy that her mother was going to get rid of the scarlet letter. She felt like she was losing a part of her mother.

  6. Pearl was being honest to her heart. The Scarlet letter has been on her mom, since she was born. When Hester left it, it was like Pearl was losing a part of her mom. Pearl did have an affinity for the scarlet letter, because the Scarlet letter was her mom's symbol. Pearl even tried to make her own out of leafs, showing that she was so used to the letter she wanted her own.

    1. Yeah, I agree. When Hester tried getting rid of the Scarlet Letter, it was her letting go of that part of her, a part that Pearl wasn't accustomed to living without.

  7. I don't think that Pearl was exaggerating at all, she had grown up with her mom having the scarlet letter on her chest. Then when Pearl saw Hester not using the letter she did not like it, it happens to many of us. We are used to certain things and then when change happens we don't like it.

    1. Agreed, it wasn’t an exaggeration, I believe it was a representation of Pearl’s innocence. She clearly does not understand what the crimson letter means, but identifies it as her mother and not the ignominious badge that symbolizes her affair.

  8. I think Pearl was used to her mother being a certain way that she didn't want her to change. Change can be difficult for some, especially a kid. Pearl wanted her real mother back which was the Letter.

  9. I think Pearl was just used to seeing the scarlet letter as part of her mother. To her it made Hester stand out and seeing her without it signified a part of Hester that was lost.
