Why is the secret being kept?

So as we continue along further, it's becoming more apparent that Dimsdale is pearl's father. He is becoming ill with guilt, shame and possibly regret and his health is deteriorating fast. So my question is why won't the truth of how he was part of the sin be revealed? I get why he refuses to come out (being a man of high regards) but why won't Hester sells him out? She struggles everyday being lonely, feeling her reminder of shame for eternal, confused as to what pearl is and where will she stand in the future ,etc. Hester carrys heavy burdens on her shoulder yet remains silent. Does she love this man?  Is she being threatened ?

  1. She admires the priest because he was always kind. Everyone saw Dimmesdale as an earthly angel and the town including Hester look at him in no other way, but a good man. Hester does not want to put a burden on the minister because he was the only one in the town that has been generous to her even in her darkness.

  2. Maybe she knows that if she reveals Dimmesdale's identity, he'll suffer worse consequences than her? Or maybe she would be shamed even more for having a baby with the precious wonderful reverend.

  3. Like Anna mentiomed, Dimmesdale would probably suffer worst consequences. He is the priest. The person that a lot of people trust and confide in. If his secret is revealed, the town's people will hate him. They will make him pay way worst than Hester...

  4. I'm going to agree with Anna. The rev is already experiencing the same hardships as Hester, but its inwardly.

  5. I agree with Anna as well, if the Reverend were to reveal his sin then the people would feel deceived and since he's seen so highly he wants to not say it outwardly for the better being of others.
