Chapter 6

Do you guys think that the turtle was symbolic for something in this chapter? As I read it, I noticed that this turtle was reintroduced from chapter 3. The turtle was dead set on going in a specific direction (Southwest) and it faced many problems, like the road, on it's way. So, I thought that it was representing the determined ways of the farmers and their families who persevere even after being kicked off their farms and accept the challenges. Also, since the turtle is heading southwest when released in this chapter, to me, it resembles the farmers who will be making their journeys to the West state of California.

  1. I completely agree with you. I believe the turtle represents the farmers, more specifically the Joad family. I predict that as the story goes on, we will learn more about the Joad family and their struggles.

    1. I agree the turtle represents someone, but I thought it represents Tom in a way because of how he is struggling to get to unknown destination by himself just like Tom is, until Tom picked him up and decides to give the turtle to his siblings.

  2. It does represent all families going to the west. I believe the turtle is carrying a seed, representing a new life, like all families they want a fresh start in the "Promise Land".

  4. I agree that the turtle is symbloic, the way it's working hard to pass obstacles in his way. The two cars as well shows the type of people they are going to face on this journey to California. Rude or nice people
