Chapter 22
It's Election Day and the whole town is filled with smiles and music. Everyone has gathered in the Market Place to celebrate this traditional holiday. As Hester and Pearl join the festivities, the captain of a ship that is leaving for England tells Hester that Roger Chillingworth is also going along for the trip. How on Earth could Chillingworth found out about Hester's and Dimmesdale's plan to escape to England? I just have no idea how he would have known that. Does any one have any explanations? Also, what is the whole point of Election Day? Does a new governor take the place of the old one?

Perhaps he had trailed Hester into the forest and eavesdropped on her conversation with Arthur Dimmsdale. The only other explanation that I can think of is Chillingworth's own intuition. After speaking to Dimmesdale, who had just returned from his rendezvous with Hester, he may have indentified the young minister's now revitalized mien as one which has had hope restored for him. Taking Dimmesdale's situation into consideration, the most probable cause would most likely be the beginning of a life free of secrets. Such a life only being available through confession, Chillingworth could have assumed that the reverend could only find solace with a change of scenery, one which would be easy to transition into. From that point it was a matter of investigating ship schedules, and voila, Chillingworth is ready to set sail. As for the Election Day, I believe that it is just a ceremony where a new governer is officially put into power, similar to a president's inauguration if I am not mistaken.
ReplyDeleteI personally believe it was pearl who somehow gave it away somehow. It seems like she would be easy to get the truth out of since she is so proud. Also she seemed pretty against it in the beginning
ReplyDeleteI think Chillingworth is keeping an eye on them all the time so he might have been at the forest eavesdropping. Also how Dimmesdale started acting different after talking to Hester, Chillingworth probably suspected something was up.
ReplyDeleteSame, either spying or ethereal intuition.
