Chapter 23

In this chapter the Townspeople are stunned by what they have seen. Mr. Dimmesdale  has died and the Scarlet Letter on his chest in exposed for everyone to see. Many people in the crowd are astonished by this and they start to question what they have seen ,therefore, Hawthorne shows his point of view as some of the noble townspeople start defending Dimmesdale. Ironically, Toget Chillingworth has wasted nearly a decade of his life trying to torture Dimmesdale and he starts to feel an inner rage because he never go his vengeance( yeah right). Any thoughts if Chillingworth will be able to aboard the ship if Hester doesn't say anything to the crewmen? Will he find a way to aboard the ship? Thoughts.

  1. In all honesty, I see no real need for Chillingworth to board the ship. The main reason for him deciding to seek passage with the ship was to loom over the runaway trio. He wanted to ensure that, regardless of their actions or movements, he would be there as a constant reminder of their transgression, prolonging his revenge with Dimmesdale's constant suffering to the very last drop. With the reverend's death, Chillingworth has been robbed of that pleasure and has also lost the reason for his continued existence, which subsisted on discovering Hester's paramour and dealing with him at the physician's own pace. He may still board the ship since the Puritanic town contains nothing of substantial interest for Chillingworth, I just do not believe that he would have any problem doing so.

  2. Chillingworth has no reason to board the ship. Like Jovanni said, the only reason he wants to get on the ship is to keep an eye on Hester and Dimmesdale, to remind them of what they did.
