Elisa's Broken Spirit

"Her face was turned away from him. ' It will be enough if we can have wine. It will be plenty.' She turned up her coat collar so he could not see that she was crying weakly-like an old woman" ( Steinbeck, 2000, p. 10).

Elisa spirit is shattered by the man's actions. Why do you think she reacts this way? Why do you think the man's actions hurt her so much? If you were in Elisa situation, how would you feel about the man's actions?

  1. I think she felt and reacted this way because she was so passionate about the flowers and for the man just to throw them out I think it broke her heart. If I were in her situation I wouldn't know what to do because even if you wanted to do something what can you do?

    1. I agree, she felt so horrible, unimportant, invisible to the world. He being callous guy, tossed the her whole life away. She worked hard and he just tossed it to the side. Maybe her feel like nothing.

    2. If I were in Elisa’s situation, I wouldn't let one man crush my dignity, but rather learn from the experience. Elisa has more than one Chrysanthemum and even more opportunities to experience luxuries men can, like attend a boxing match, she just doesn't know it yet.

  2. I agree with Christopher, Elisa's flowers reflected her and she had a grand affinity with them. This can be connected to the Grapes Of Wrath, the Joad family (and several other migrant families) were forced off their land, the land their own progenitors lived and died on leaving them empty and lost. A part of Elisa died along
with the flowers. Lastly, if this were to ever occur to me I'd most likely be shattered as well and as Christopher said, what can you do?

  3. Likewise to Reyna's and John's comment it's because she was passionate about her flowers. It is part of her and she's become attached to them on a spiritual level.
The man actions hurt her so much because the instructions and facts she gave to him was just concluded as if what she said was nothing. It meant nothing.
I would feel heartbroken about it but then afterward refrain from ever saying anything to anyone about the flowers and keep quite because I would learn that what ever I say doesn't matter. So why talk.

  5. She felt absolutely devastated because the flowers were a result of her hard work and dedication to it. For the man to deceive her and simply throw the flowers away was insensible and it probably made her feel worthless as well, which is what I would feel if I was in her situation.

    1. I would feel the same way as well, like you said she put in all that hard work and dedication and to see it gone to waste would be terrible, so I can sympathize with her.

  6. I agree with all the comments so far. The flowers were symbolic of her. She dedicated much work and patience towards making it look beautiful and when he initially showed interest this excited her as someone was finally valuing her efforts. However as he threw them out, it symbolized rejection and defeat.

    1. Yeah I agree Alexis, the flowers did represent her and her hard work. She valued them, and the man throwing them away, probably made her feel terrible and rejected. I hope if the story would have continued, that Elisa would have persevered through he rejection.

  7. Brianda Curiel: I can agree with Chris because in this situation you can only do so much. I believe when you truly care for something materialistic and its rejected it can really damage you just as it did to Elisa. 09/19/2016

    1. I disagree, I believe Elisa’s love for her craft and the products grown from it is far from materialistic. It's not just about the physical object itself, it's her passion and dignity, the flowers are what makes her feel somewhat powerful in a society ruled by men.
