Mrs. McEachern

I really like Mrs. McEachern's character in the novel. Even though she is powerless, she is referred to as a good woman. She has been kind to Christmas and has even stood up for him. Even Christmas had nothing bad to say about her. What do you guys think of her character? I also feel bad for her because she was with a terrible man who treated her horribly. Christmas was also rude to her and left her by herself alone with nothing. He took everything away from her when all she did was be kind to her. I don't know, it just really bothers me that Christmas just left her with heartache. Am I the only one who feels for Mrs. McEachern?

  1. I can see where you are coming from, but Mrs. McEachern, as you said, is powerless so she really didn't have much say or didn't want to go against her dead husband. I do feel sorry that she had to live through is austere attitude but she has the same amount of say but just decided to stay isolated from her husband.

  2. I really like her too; however, I think she, in a way, was blinded and acted as if nothing was going on when she was witnessing young Christmas getting abused by Mr.McEachern. I mean, she was powerless but she could've atleast tried to comfort the young child? or even try to talk some sense into her husband. She did treat Christmas kind after all but she could've helped him a bit more, noting that he had none to go to for comfort and as a young kid he needed her as a motherly figure? I like her character but I think she didn't do enough for the kid.

  3. From: Jessica Yanez - I have to agree with Alexia. She made a really good point in pointing out that even though Mrs. McEachern might be powerless, she could have at least tied to comfort Christmas. No matter if you have no power in the world at all, you still have the oppotunity to stop something by just speaking up. That's all you have to do. I feel like Christmas's life would have been different if he would have had support from Mrs. McEachern at least.

  4. I feel bad for her since she is powerless she had to witness things that she shouldn't have happend I n the fist place, like chistmas being rude, it wasn't her fault. And her husband dying, Christmas kinda just broke her and left.

  6. I disagree with you guys saying Mrs. McEachern did not show Christmas comfort because when she tried, he did not want her comfort. He thought by giving in to her, it would mean he is a part of the family. He did not want to be part of the family, so he did not take her comfort and help. Mrs.McEachern did as much as she could, I believe because she did stick up for Christmas and lied to her husband saying she did wrong. How is she going to talk to her husband when he treats her like garbage and ignores her? She has no power, therefore she could not challenge her husband.

  7. I don't know what happened to Mrs. McEachern, but I'm guessing she either died from heartache and depression or she is an old and poor widow.
